Harwich Library is located in an exposed location in a coastal town and had suffered from a leaking roof for a number of years. In order to stop further water from damaging the building was essential that a rooflight running the length of building was replaced.

It was also imperative that the Library be only closed for as short a period as possible.

Access to the roof was problematic as this was only possible from the front of the premises. Private properties adjoined either side. A crash deck had to be installed within the building to ensure the safe removal and reinstatement works to be completed. Even then access to ensure each rooflight was weathered proved extremely difficult.

Asbestos was present throughout and had to be removed before any works commenced. In addition to the roof work the curtain walling was replaced to the front elevation.

Internal refurbishment work included alterations to wiring, decorations and flooring.

The work was undertaken for Mitie FM on behalf of Essex County Council.
