Halls of residence refurbishments by their nature require total commitment by all parties to meet a ‘cast in stone’ finish date. With an academic year running from September to July to some 21,000 students, 4,000 of whom are non UK the University only has a ‘programme window’ to undertake major refurbishment projects particularly to key student accommodation in just 11 weeks.
Beardwell were given this task that comprised the refurbishment to the Halls of Residence accommodation including refurbishment and redecoration of bedrooms corridors staircases and kitchens with the additional requirement of bathroom refurbishment at Middle Mill Block J.
The University had suffered in years gone by from poor project management, poor planning and ultimately a shortfall in quality expectations. A new Client to Beardwell we were keen to forge from the outset a collaborative working relationship with the Client – so important to delivering challenging projects.
Inevitable problems with potential to impact on completion were worked through together to find solutions often resulting in working extended hours to minimise their effect. We are proud of the fact that all time budget and quality targets were met through the sheer hard work by all parties.
Testament to the success of the project has been the subsequent award to Beardwell of next year’s £1.4m student accommodation refurbishment programme.
