The project comprised the construction of a new two storey sixth form block on a sloping site providing 1500m2 of new state of the art teaching accommodation.
Enabling works included the demolition of an existing cottage and temporary realignment of the north boundary to the public park to allow construction of a contiguous piled wall.
During site investigation works a strategic water main was discovered passing through the proposed line of piling. Works were redesigned in association with the Statutory Authority to accommodate the main within the project.
On completion of the piling over 2000m3 of bulk dig was undertaken to reduce levels. Foundations comprised deep concrete pads upon which the new steel frame was erected.
Metal decking formed the first floor and roof. The envelope comprised brick and block cavity walls and metsec framing, Kingspan carrier panels and trespa cladding.
Aluminium double glazed windows doors and curtain walling were incorporated into the fabric of the building.
Comfort cooling and services were provided throughout the building with standard finishes to toilet areas and classrooms.
Contractor Design elements included contiguous piles; steel connections; main entrance canopy; external fire escape stairs.
